DOZY THIEVES LEAVE LOOT IN GETAWAY CAR Raiders smash Garda vehicle as they escape

- BY NIALL O’CONNOR

TWO bungling robbers forgot to take home a cash box after they abandoned their getaway car yesterday.

The clueless criminals struck at a bank in Raheny, North Dublin, at 12.05pm as it received a delivery of money.

One raider emerged from a Renault Megane armed with a hammer while his accomplice waited in the car.

As the guard left the cash-intransit van, the raider threatened him with the hammer and snatched the box of cash.

He then ran back to the car and fled at speed in the direction of La Vista Avenue, Clontarf. As they were driving at speed they rammed an approaching Garda car.

Luckily none of the officers were injured in the incident. The car continued at speed and when it stopped the culprits ran off but forgot to take their loot.

SCENE

Gardai arrived a short time later and sealed off the scene.

The security guard was uninjured and gave a detailed description of the attackers. Detectives launched an investigation and have examined CCTV.

A Garda spokesman appealed for witnesses to come forward to help them track down the robbers.

He said: “Officers are seeking witnesses to a cash-in-transit robbery.

“At approximately 12.05pm a security guard was making a cash delivery to a bank in Raheny village.

“He was approached by a man who was armed with what was described as a hammer and forced to hand over a cashbox. The raider left the scene in a Renault Megane driven by a second male.

“A short time later the Megane rammed a Garda car on the Clontarf Road, this vehicle was found abandoned on La Vista Avenue. Officers also recovered the cash box. No arrests have been made.

“We wish to appeal to anyone who noticed anything suspicious in Raheny village and La Vista Avenue between 11.30am and 12.30pm.
