Mum of two & boyfriend accused of ‘€15k raid’

- BY NIALL O’CONNOR BY

District Court A YOUNG mother of two and her boyfriend appeared in court yesterday charged with an aggravated burglary.

Catherine Dempsey and Carlos Lawrence are accused of targeting a house in Terenure, South Dublin, in the early hours of Wednesday.

At Dublin District Court yesterday, 25-year-old Dempsey, of Michael Mallin House in the South of the city, was charged with aggravated burglary.

Lawrence, 26, from Rosary Road, Marylands, South Dublin, faces a count of aggravated burglary while in possession of a wedge hammer.

Garda John Walsh objected to bail citing the seriousness of the case and fears she would attempt to evade justice or interfere with witnesses.

Garda Walsh said it was alleged the man was told “he would be knee-capped if he did not comply and his extended family was being watched”. The court heard he was struck in the face with hammer and his phone was taken as well as €150 from his wallet.

Lawrence was remanded in custody by Judge Brian O’shea to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Friday.

Dempsey was refused bail and will appear in Dublin District Court on Wednesday.

It is alleged Lawrence and Dempsey, with faces covered, broke into the house and threatened the householder, who is in his 60s, with a wedge hammer.

The court was told the man was forced to withdraw more than €15,000 from his bank account.

Dempsey was allegedly found with €6,000 in her handbag and another €6,000 “on her person”.

Judge O’shea noted it was alleged joint enterprise was involved and he refused to grant bail.

Following an application from Mr Young, the judge also acceded to a request that she would be allowed medical and psychiatric treatment in custody.
