Son spends his mum’s wages playing FIFA 18

Parent’s warning after money mishap by teen

- BY DAVID MAHER

a DISTRAUGHT mum has warned parents after her son accidentally spent her entire month’s wages playing a video game.

The Cork woman bought Playstation’s FIFA 18 for her 14-year-old using her debit card, which led to him purchasing “points” while playing – as there were no alerts they would cost money.

When she later tried to withdraw money from her bank account, the mum was informed there were insufficient funds and her entire month’s wages and worse still, a bonus, were gone.

Now the family is facing into a bleak Christmas with no money.

The woman revealed her son is so by what’s happened he hasn’t left his room since last Monday.

Sony, the company behind Playstation, has refused to return the money spent on the game.

The concerned mum, who did not want to be identified, told PJ Coogan on Cork’s 96FM on Thursday: “He just didn’t understand but every 10 points was costing him more money.

“I think you need the points to move players but I am not aware of how it works.

“When purchasing the game or playing it they don’t tell you that this has a cost element. He didn’t have to do anything or click anything to activate my card.

“I contacted Playstation and they told me that it was an adults’ game. I explained he was 14 and he didn’t underupset stand he was playing with money. They said there was nothing they can do. For any parents out there I want them to be aware. “Maybe there was [a lock or warning system in place] but my 14-year-old son didn’t see it

“He is withdrawn and is blaming himself. He reckoned he has spoiled Christmas for his family. I can’t even get him to school.” FIFA 18 publisher EA Sports has been contacted for comment.

No response had been received at time of publication.
