5 OF BEST GAA COMEBACKS IN HISTORY

- BY PAT NOLAN

1991 Leinster preliminary round third replay: Meath 2-10 Dublin 0-15

PAUL CURRAN pointed to put Dublin six up well into the second half. A Brian Stafford goal brought Meath back within two but Niall Guiden pushed Dublin four clear. Kevin Foley emerged as the unlikely hero, finishing off a sweeping move with a goal to draw the sides level before David Beggy (right) kicked one of the most famous winners in GAA history. HAVING been six points down with just a minute of normal time remaining, Moorefield’s victory over St Loman’s in the Leinster club final will go down as one of the most memorable comebacks in modern times.

It also conjures memories of other unlikely turnarounds, five of which we’ve listed here...

2006 All-ireland semi-final: Mayo 1-16 Dublin 2-12

DUBLIN moved seven points clear 11 minutes into the second half but they would only score a single point for the rest of the game as a first All-ireland final appearance in 11 years slipped by. Andy Moran’s goal brought Mayo back within two points in the 51st minute. After Conor Mortimer’s free put Mayo in front, Alan Brogan finally ended

Dublin’s scoring drought but there was still time for Ciaran Mcdonald

(right) to pop up and score his iconic leftfooted winner.

2008 Leinster SFC quarter-final: Wexford 2-14 Meath 2-13

Meath, surprise All-ireland semi-finalists the year before, were primed to push on for a Leinster title when taking a 10-point half-time lead. They retained a 10-point advantage with 20 minutes to play but then the wheels started to come off.

Goals from Redmond Barry and PJ Banville brought Wexford back within three points and their cause was helped by Meath midfielder Mark Ward’s dismissal. The comeback was completed with four unanswered points, the last two coming from Mattie Forde, who bent over a winner to set Wexford on a voyage to their first All-ireland semi in 63 years.

2013 All-ireland club final: St Brigid’s 2-11 Ballymun Kickhams 2-10

St Brigid’s looked set for another St Patrick’s Day nightmare as Ballymun hit them for two early goals to establish an eight-point lead after 10 minutes. But a second half Karol Mannion goal drew them level before veteran Frankie Dolan (above) was presented with a late chance and he nailed it on his left foot.

2015 Leinster semi: Westmeath 3-19 Meath 2-18

Westmeath had never beaten Meath in the Championship and it looked even less likely when they fell 10 points behind in the first half. Meath still enjoyed a nine-point advantage with 20 minutes left only to be outscored 2-8 to 0-1. Kieran Martin wreaked havoc and hit his second goal before a string of points, culminating in a fisted effort by Martin, put them in front as Meath’s discipline deserted them. Victory was crowned by a breakaway goal from John Heslin (above).
