Dad gets to see Santa visit son as €150k raised for cancer fight
CHRISTMAS has come early for a man diagnosed with bowel cancer just weeks ago after pals raised money for his treatment.
Michael Mcgrath was terrified he might not get to see Santa visit his eight-month-old son Senan and wife Susan.
But astonishingly, his friends and neighbours managed to raise €150,000 in just two weeks.
And yesterday Michael returned home to Letterkenny, Co Donegal, from Austria where he underwent immunotherapy treatment.
The 40-year-old captured the nation’s heart when he appealed for financial support to help his fight.
His Gofundme page has passed the €150,000 mark but will remain open as his recovery continues.
Last night Michael’s sister Mary said: “He has just finished his last treatment in Vienna until the New Year.
“Things have gone to plan so far and though it’s only early days there is a very positive vibe from doctors. Michael with Susan and Senan Michael is really looking forward to getting home to Senan and the rest of the family.
“Once again, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for making this treatment a possibility and for giving Michael a shot at seeing his wee man growing up.
“We want to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas. Enjoy the time with your loved ones, as we will.
“Keep up the prayers as we know it’s still a long road ahead but at least there is a road.”
Michael is a teacher at a school in Crumlin, Dublin. The GAA fanatic met wife Susan, from Donaghmede, at the Croke Park Hotel after a Dublin v Donegal game.
He said: “I’m just so thankful to be here. I feel good and I’m very positive about the future – I have to be.
“This is going to be a very special Christmas and I am going to really enjoy every minute of it.
“The New Year will bring a new start and I will return to Vienna but I know that with the backing of my wife, son, family and so many friends, I will battle through this.”
