- BY BRYNMOR PATTISON

Shane and brother Tom BIG-HEARTED members of a GAA club are raising money for one of their pals who is battling motor neurone disease.

Shane Mcmahon, who recently turned 40, was diagnosed with the illness in October.

The dad of one also has a baby on the way in January with fiancee Roslyn.

The money raised will be used to support his future medical care costs, medical equipment costs and to help modify and adapt his home.

The total goal is €50,000 and so far just over €14,250 had been raised by 120 people over five days.

With motor neurone disease, special nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control important muscle activities like walking, speaking and breathing stop working properly. There is no known cure.

Now Shane, from Lisanisk, Co Monaghan, has to face travelling to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin every six weeks to monitor and treat the illness.

The former GAA player has more recently served as a referee and his club Carrickmacross Emmets is hosting its annual Christmas swim on Christmas Day at 12.30pm at Creevy Lake, Carrickmacross, where they will be taking donations for the

family.

In a post on its website, the club said: “Emmets have always helped our local charities through the Annual Christmas Swim a but this year it takes on a significant importance to the Emmets – because it is for one of our very own club members – hopefully the public will give generously to the fund to ensure the greatest assistance and support can provided for Shane and his family.”
