The first was after the phonecall saying his 12-year-old son was in remission from leukaemia after years of chemotherapy.

The second was last month when Thomson, now 6ft 9in and aged 21, achieved his childhood dream of winning his European Tour card by birdieing the final two holes at Q School.

Their emotional embrace by the side of the 18th green in Tarragona in Spain is one of the feelgood images of the year.

“It was something else,” recalled Thomson. “Me and my dad and my whole family have been through a hell of a lot so for him to be there and see it...

“He just broke down – it obviously meant a hell of a lot to him.

“And I have had so many messages of congratulations – it makes you feel amazing when you know you have so much support.”

Jonathan Thomson was dubbed Jigger because of his love of dancing as a nipper – and his desire to become a pro golfer followed when he was seven.

“It was pretty much when I was diagnosed with leukaemia,” he said. “It just gave me that extra spark, it was an exciting thing to dream about at the time.

“I had always been brought up around golf (Nigel is catering manager at Rotherham Golf Club) so the idea was just really exciting. It kept me going through the hard times.

“I was in and out of Sheffield Children’s Hospital for four years. My mum and dad were always telling me: ‘You are going to get through this, you are going to be a professional golfer one day.’ Those things spur you on when times are tough.

“Now, after a bad day on the course, you know there are a lot of people having a lot worse day than you are having.”

Thomson (right) has the logo of charity PACT on his golf bag and wants to become a role model for children now fighting illness. “I always wanted to be a guy that kids who were ill could look up,” he said. “If there is somebody like me who has leukaemia or whatever and wants to be a professional golfer, to be an inspiration for that child would be a pretty amazing feeling. In future I will certainly do hospital visits to kids just to give something back.”

Not surprisingly, the tallest player ever to qualify for the European Tour clubs the ball a long way and reckons his average driving distance is 320-330 yards. “My height is a massive advantage,” said the world No.623. “It is getting to the golf course that is the problem. I am constantly in uncomfortable positions and uncomfortable seats.”

Thomson, a stablemate of Jamie Donaldson and Tyrrell Hatton at Firestart Sports Management, has already played two European Tour events as a full member and plans to tee up next at the South African Open on January 11. His first aim is to retain his card. But the Yorkshireman, whose interests on his European Tour bio are listed as ‘Having a pint’, said: “People say: ‘How do you feel?’ And I say: ‘I am the same person.’ “I am probably in a bit of a better position but I am not a different person.”
