KANE PUTS HIS RECORD STRAIGHT

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

HARRY KANE insists beating Southampton is more important than eclipsing Alan Shearer.

Kane needs one goal against the Saints today to move clear of Shearer as the Premier League’s top scorer in a calendar year.

The Tottenham hotshot equalled Shearer’s 22-year-old record of 36 goals with his hat-trick at Burnley and admits he would love to break it.

But he says he will always put the team’s success before personal glory as Spurs chase a Champions League spot.

“Of course,” said Kane. “I’ve always said that. That will always be the case.

“I’m the striker, I’ll get the praise and get spoken about, but it’s so important the team does well.

“Going into the Burnley game, people were talking about the record and that I was three behind. I just hoped to get one or two to take into the Southampton game.

“So, yeah, it’s good to equal it, but most importantly for me, it’s the wins that matter.”

Kane has bagged 93 Premier League goals and the England star admits he dreams of deposing Shearer as the competition’s all-time top scorer.

Shearer managed 260 for Blackburn and Newcastle, and Kane is on course, having reached 93 in a little over three-and-a-half years.

“You dream about it,” he said. “But I’d be silly to look that far ahead.

“I’ve still got a long way to go, a lot can happen in football. Hopefully I can stay fit, stay sharp and we’ll see what happens.

“Maybe if I get to

200 and I’ve got a few more years left, I’ll start to think about it.

“I’ve had a great 2017 and hopefully I can improve in 2018 and get even better.”

Kane also claimed being targeted by opposition fans is spurring Dele

Alli on to play better.

Alli was jeered by Burnley supporters, who felt he should have been sent off for lunging at Charlie Taylor and that he dived to win the penalty for Kane’s opener.

The striker said: “Maybe he fed off the crowd, he was the pantomime villain out there. He had two assists – the penalty and my third one. That’s when he’s at his best.’’
