Freezing end to 2017 is forecast

IRELAND is bracing itself for a particular­ly chilly end to 2017, along with rain and snow.

Tens of thousands of us are out and about shaking off the Christmas turkey – but wrap up well if you’re among them.

Today will be cold and mainly dry, with good sunny spells and some wintry showers.

Forecaster­s predict temperatur­es will range between 3C and 7C.

The winds will ease down this evening while it will be very cold and frosty tonight.

A Met Eireann forecaster added: “Lowest temperatur­es zero to -3C, with icy roads and possibly some patches of freezing fog also.”

Tomorrow will bring frost, ice and fog which will slowly clear while most places in the country will be dry and bright. Clouds will cover the South-west and West of the country.

A Met Eireann forecaster added: “Some rain and sleet will develop here, with snow over high ground. Cold and frosty early Thursday night over Ulster and Leinster, with temperatur­es down to zero or -1C and some icy patches.”

Temperatur­es aren’t likely to climb much with the outlook quite cold.

Friday morning should be dry in most places with some scattered showers but it will change as the day goes on.

Heavy rain will come from the Atlantic with sleet and snow on high ground.

The weekend is set to be bring more unsettled weather.
