IRISH DAD DIES AFTER OZ STAB HORROR

Heartache as Charlie loses his fight for life

AN Irish dad has died in Australia after being stabbed in the head as he waited for a taxi.

Father-of-two Charlie Mccarthy, from Aghada, East Cork, was knifed in Perth last week.

Parish priest Dennis Kelleher said: “It’s a terrible tragedy at any time, but over Christmas and so far from home only adds to the pain and grief.”

TRIBUTES were paid yesterday to an Irish dad who has died days after a stab attack in Australia.

Charlie Mccarthy, 32, from Aghada, East Cork, was knifed in the head as he waited for a taxi in Perth just before Christmas.

It is understand the incident happened after a fight broke out between two fishermen nearby.

Mr Mccarthy had spent the past few days in hospital and his family travelled from Ireland to be at his bedside.

But sadly he was pronounced dead shortly after they arrived in the country.

Popular Mr Mccarthy leaves behind wife Nicole and children Niall, two, and five-year-old Ciara.

He had been living in Australia since 2010.

Aghada Parish Priest Dennis Kelleher told parishione­rs of the tragedy yesterday morning.

He said: “It was Saturday morning here when the news broke that Charlie had been seriously injured and there was a real sense of shock and sadness.

“We prayed for him at Masses over Christmas as family members went out there but then news broke in the last day or so that he had passed away so there’s a real sadness here.

“He’s in our thoughts and prayers because it’s a terrible tragedy at any time, but over Christmas and so far from home only adds to the pain and grief for his poor family.”

The official Twitter account of Aghada Parish also paid tribute to the Irishman, saying: “So sorry to hear of the passing of Charlie Mccarthy of Upper Aghada who lived in Perth with his young family.

“Let us keep his family in Perth and here at home in Aghada in our prayers.”

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoma­n told the Irish Mirror: “We are aware of the incident and we are providing consular assistance to the family.”
