TRIBUTES FLOW FOR POPULAR SEAN

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

TRIBUTES for the late Sean Mccaffrey continued to pour in over the weekend.

On Saturday, Irish football was saddened to hear of the death of the popular 58-year-old (right) who was Ireland underage boss and also managed Monaghan United and Dundalk.

Mccaffrey succeeded Brian Kerr as Irish U17 and U19 manager when Kerr left to take up the senior job in 2003.

He managed a number of the current senior team, including Robbie Brady, Darren

Randolph, Stephen Ward, Jeff Hendrick, Shane Long and David Meyler.

Mccaffrey was also well regarded in League of Ireland circles where he managed Monaghan and then, in 2012, Dundalk.

Dundalk midfielder Chris Shields remembered Mccaffrey as “a great football man and a great character too. He’ll be missed.”

Cork City’s Gearoid Morrissey tweeted: “Very saddened to hear of the passing of a great man, a great character.

“He was a man whose advice and help I‘ll never forgot. He always made you feel like the best player on the pitch.”

And former Irish international Darren O’dea said: “Absolutely gutted to hear Sean Mccaffrey has passed away.

“A top coach and man.

His favourite phrase was ‘everyday you either add to or take away from your reputation’. That always stuck with me. RIP.”
