Oz PM hints role is in doubt

Harry with Meghan PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly flown to the south of France to spend the New Year together.

They were spotted on a flight to Nice sitting in economy class, according to one social media user.

Known only as Caroline, she posted on Twitter on New Year’s Eve: “My friend flew Prince Harry & Meghan Markle to Nice today! Apparently they sat at the back in economy.”

It is thought Harry and Meghan may be heading for a break in the French Alps. The couple, who will marry on May 19 at Windsor Castle, spent Christmas at Sandringham with the royals.

Kensington Palace declined to comment on the couple’s reported trip. PRINCE Charles’ future role as Australia’s king has been thrown into doubt by the country’s republican Prime Minister.

Malcolm Turnbull said he expected the issue of Australians ditching the monarch as head of state to come to the fore when the Queen’s reign ends.

Speaking in Sydney on New Year’s Day, Mr Turnbull said: “I don’t think it will become a frontline issue before then.”

In 1999 in a referendum, 54.87% of Australians voted to keep the Queen. Mr Turnbull, who had campaigned for a republic, added: “We all say ‘long live the Queen’ with great sincerity and love.”

He said the first thing needed if the issue became live again “is an open discussion about how a president would be elected”. He suggested a postal vote on being a republic.

His comments came after Australia’s former PM Paul Keating blasted him for not pushing the issue further.

Mr Keating said: “How utterly absurd that we have to borrow the monarch of another country. How pathetic.”

The Queen is still head of state of 15 Commonwealth realms, including New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica and Barbados. However a new monarch could prompt several to rethink their ties to the Crown. Before meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace last July, Liberal Party leader Mr Turnbull, 63, declared: “Most Australian republicans are Elizabethans as well.”

Prince Charles met Mr Turnbull on a visit to Australia with wife Camilla in 2015.
