Joe and Cam are expanding horizons as they target more big names to work with

-

Sigma’s 2015 debut album Life ensured dance DJ Joe Lenzie and Cameron Edwards became hot property. Loaded with chart-smashing singles and guest stars including Rita Ora, Labrinth and Paloma Faith, it turned the pair into festival favourites and turned their wish list of collaborators into reality.

New single Forever features their latest additions to that list, Tinie Tempah and Yxng Bane.

“We’ve always wanted to work with Tinie,” Cameron enthuses. “He’s basically like a British institution in terms of grime and hip-hop, so to get him on the track was wicked – and Yxng Bane too. I think he calls himself the black Harry Styles. It was wicked working with him too.”

It’s more than a decade since Lenzie from Harpenden, Herts, and Edwards, of Woking, Surrey, met at Leeds University and bonded over their mutual love of drum and bass.

As their reputation has grown so have their show-stopping live sets at festivals. Last year, their music crossed a new frontier when they took over London’s Royal Albert Hall. Joe, 27, says: “We’re used to playing to crowds that are just standing up and who are dancing and having fun, so we were a little bit concerned about that prior to the gig. But we had a load of strings, the whole live band, some amazing projections, a ridiculous sound system, and tons and tons of lights. I don’t think it’s anything that’s really been done before.

“We were the first drum ’n’ bass act to headline there and it was one of our best gigs to date.”

Currently working with a range of writers before choosing future guest stars, Joe and Cam are keen to expand musical horizons as they go. Joe says: “Our music has progressed, in terms of styles and stuff. We’re much more open to working at lots of different tempos and experimenting with different instruments.”

Both have found a sure-fire way of staying grounded despite their success. “I think if your girlfriend isn’t kicking your ass you’re not doing something right,” says Joe.

“You need to have a solid girl behind you who is gonna make sure that you’re not getting ahead of yourself.”
