Bishop’s paedo alert

Evil former priest lives near schools

- BY CIARAN MURPHY

A BISHOP has warned parishioners about “an extremely dangerous paedophile” ex-priest who lives about 150 yards from a primary school.

Sick Oliver O’grady, 72, now lives near six schools and a Montessori facility in the heart of Waterford city.

The pervert was convicted for raping and abusing at least 25 children in California from 1973 onwards.

Matters came to a head a week before Christmas when it was pointed out to the locals O’grady, who has no affiliation with the Catholic Church or with the Waterford and Lismore Diocese, had a history of the sexual abuse of children.

In a letter dated December 21, Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan said: “If this man is seen in your parish, please notify Bishop’s House as soon as possible. I have informed the gardai of his recent activities.”

The letter, which was sent to schools and parishes, warned the public about “an extremely dangerous paedophile who lives in Waterford, but is not from here”.

He warned “all safeguarding representatives and parish groups, especially those working in any way with children” to be extra vigilant. One concerned local told the Waterford News & Star she approached O’grady after she watched a film about him called Deliver Us From Evil.

She approached the former priest, who is originally from Limerick, with her husband and he apologised for getting close to her family in a “matter of fact way”.

O’grady can be regularly seen in public in Waterford, while his identity is becoming increasingly more known, with him receiving negative attention.
