new syfy show is off to a Flyer
got writer’s series made in ireland
AN Irish-made sci-fi series based on a novella by Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin has been commissioned by Netflix.
US cable channel Syfy has announced it has given the green light to Nightflyers.
It will feature Gretchen Mol of Boardwalk Empire, Eoin Macken from The Night Shift, Fast And Furious 6 star David Ajala and Brian F O’byrne of Love/hate fame.
Based on Martin’s 1980 tale – turned into a film in 1987 – Nightflyers tells the story of “eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath” who join the crew of the Nightflyer and its reclusive captain in seeking alien life at the edge of the solar system.
There are no details at present on when production will start on the series, which has the support of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Bord Scannan na heireann/the Irish Film Board.
The news comes as HBO has been left reeling after scripts from season eight of Game Of Thrones were leaked online.
The network recently confirmed that fans will have to wait until 2019 for the final series.
The leaked transcripts have not been verified as
the show’s writers notoriously remain tight-lipped over future storylines so viewers are unlikely to find out if the spoilers released are true until Game Of Thrones returns. Meanwhile, Kit Harington, who stars as Jon Snow, has claimed that the show’s ending could disappoint fans.
In an interview with Deadline, he said: “I think there’s a certain pressure I’ve not felt before. “Whereas before, every year there’s always been a bit of pressure, this season is one where we could easily let people down. “Obviously, we don’t want to do that so we’re very much stepping up everyone’s game which is very apparent, at least to me.”
