A SCHOOLBOY yesterday unveiled plans to introduce nationwide lifesaving CPR training with a simple card system.

James Dunne was one of 1,100 of the country’s brightest students showcasing 550 projects in RDS Arena as part of this year’s BT Young Scientist Exhibition.

The 14-year-old explained his project aimed to develop a system where everyone in Ireland could administer emergency CPR from the age of 10.

James, who goes to St Michael’s College, Ballsbridge, South Dublin, added: “I completed a national survey of 1,269 people from a variety of places and circumstances and compiled spreadsheets of the data I received – which showed one in four people have valid CPR training.

“My idea is to do it and submit your certificate to an office and get a card that’s valid for two years – and after that people return to do the process again.”

James says the project, in the political science category of the awards, was inspired by his work as a volunteer with the Order of Malta and he was tasked Molly Measey with her project with coming up with a project for school.

He hopes eventually a law will be made that CPR training will be mandatory for everyone.
