DONALD Trump has been branded a “racist” by the UN after calling several poor countries “sh**holes”.

In talks with congressional leaders about migrants from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa, Mr Trump was heard asking, “Why are we having all these people from sh**hole countries come here?” and, “Why do we need more Haitians?”

The US President, who also wanted to know why America did not attract more people from Norway, has denied using the word “sh**hole”, although he admitted using “tough” language.

But Democrat Dick Durbin, a Senator for Illinois, was at the meeting and said: “I have seen the comments in the Press. I have not read one of them that’s inaccurate. He said things that were hate-filled, vile and racist.” Mr Durbin said “sh**holes” was “the exact word” used “repeatedly” by Mr Trump.

Mr Durbin said: “When the question was asked about Haitians, he said, ‘Haitians? Do we need more Haitians?’”

Rupert Colville, the UN human rights spokesman, said: “There’s no other word you can use but ‘racist’.

“You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents as ‘sh**holes’, whose entire populations who are not white, are therefore not welcome. The positive comment on Norway makes the underlying sentiment very clear.”

The African Union, representing 55 countries, said it was “frankly alarmed” by the comments.

Haiti’s government said Mr Trump’s words reflected a “racist view of the Haitian community”.

Robert Reich, Secretary of Labour under Bill Clinton, said Mr Trump seemed to hold Nazi views, tweeting: “To the Nazis, the purest Aryans were the Nordic people of Germany and Norway.”

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox said Mr Trump was the “foulest sh*thole in the world”.

Downing Street said Theresa May did not agree with Mr Trump’s view of the nations referred to as “sh**holes”.

Hillary Clinton tweeted that the US was being “subjected to Trump’s ignorant, racist views of anyone who doesn’t look like him”. The US Ambassador to Panama, John Feeley, said he felt “duty bound” to resign, and other US ambassadors were reportedly being called in to account for Mr Trump’s comments.

Haiti’s ambassador in Washington Paul Altidor said: “We hope he didn’t say those things. If he did, we hope he apologises.” Mr Trump had earlier tweeted: “Never said anything derogatory about Haitians. Made up by Dems.”

But White House sources said he had called friends asking how the “sh**hole” comment went down after the meeting on Thursday.

He refused to answer questions about the controversy yesterday as he signed a proclamation declaring Monday Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day.
