English feeling confident of a quick Silver fix

- BY DEAN WILSON

ENGLAND insist they will have the pace ammunition to fight fire with fire the next time they contest the Ashes Down Under.

With fast-bowling legends James Anderson and Stuart Broad edging ever closer to retirement, the need to find their replacements is pressing.

That will be the job of new fast bowling coach Chris Silverwood, who namechecked two up-andcoming bowlers as men who can team up with the fit-again Mark Wood, who has set the one-day series alight already.

Silverwood said: “There is pace in English cricket. George Garton and Jamie Overton are two and they’re 90mph bowlers.

“We want to work with them, bring them through and hopefully progress them into Test cricket.

“Fast bowling is hard work, but the guys are out there and some of them are young. We have to give them time to develop. There’s no magic wand.”

The injuries suffered by Wood highlight just how hard it is to develop a genuinely fast bowler.

But the sight of him getting

David Warner to hop about before dismissing him at the MCG was a reminder of what could have been in the Ashes this winter, and what could be to come in four years’ time.

“He was impressive,” said Siverwood.

“He was the fastest bowler out there.

“That first-ball bouncer he sent down, he said he was going to do it and he did it. I love that.

“He’s got a lot of grit about him. He puts his money where his mouth is. He went out there and did it.

“It is about being aggressive. We saw in the Test matches the Australian bowlers were aggressive with us – let’s go back at them and be aggressive as well.

“You have got to watch people in their own backyard and then try to learn from them.”
