GARY Speed signed for Leeds United in 1988 when he was 18.

The midfielder won the first of his 85 caps for Wales aged 20 and captained his country 44 times.

In 1996 he left Leeds for Everton where he was voted player of the year in his first season. In 1998 he joined Newcastle Utd and went on to play for Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield Utd before becoming Wales manager in 2010, when he was awarded the MBE.

He told jurors yesterday: “Four people from teams I have played with, with Bennell, have taken their own lives.

“Whether they have taken their lives due to Barry solely I don’t know, but all I know is how it’s had an impact on me and how it could impact on people.”
