GARDAI yesterday said the people shielding the killers of Det Adrian Donohoe “will never have peace” as they continue to protect them.

Sources added the officer’s murderers are being sheltered by individuals living along the Armagh border.

Other suspects have left Ireland to go on the run in the US as investigators continue to face a wall of silence as they seek justice for their tragic colleague.

Speaking on the fifth anniversary of the fatal shooting, gardai made a desperate plea for help.

Chief Supt Christy Mangan said witnesses to the killing at Lordship Credit Union in Co Louth have details that could help catch the gang.

He added: “The people involved in this murder no doubt got logistical and emotional support from their family and friends.

“I am speaking to you in particular, the family and friends of these who were involved in the murder.

“Your mind will never have peace until you tell the truth about what happened to Adrian, it is not too late to do the right thing.”

The senior officer confirmed progress has been made in the investigation but refused to reveal the details.

He paid tribute to those who have come forward but said he believes there are still people who could solve the case.

Chief Supt Mangan said: “In any murder investigation there is a sense of fear within communities.

“I think Adrian’s murder strikes a chord with people.

“He was a man with family supporting the community and life Adrian and wife Caroline

was taken from him while he was out protecting people. The reason why we are here is I am confident there are people who have information.

“There are people sitting on the fence as regards should I, can I?

“You certainly can come to us and the information imparted to us will be treated with the utmost confidence.” Yesterday the grieving colleagues, friends and family of Det Donohoe, attended a memorial Mass in Dundalk. The dad of two, 41, was shot dead while trying to prevent robbery in Bellurgan on January 25, 2013. Acting Garda chief Donall O Cualain also appealed for witnesses. He said: “The key to solving this callous and brutal murder remains in the local community and, most particularly, those people who know who the killers are.

“They must ask themselves whether they can after five years continue to protect people who are prepared to murder a Garda in cold blood.”

Meanwhile, sources have claimed detectives are aware of at least five people directly involved in the killing.

One added: “They have identified suspects, two of whom travelled to the States while on the run.

“One of the men in the US was forced to return after a visit by gardai.

“There is nothing clearly tying these people to the murder.

“The only way to progress the case to a charge is if one of the gang or a family member turn State’s witness.”
