IRA bomber fined €16k for failing to pay tolls

Dickson dodged M50 levy 389 times

A CONVICTED IRA bomber has been fined €16,000 for nonpayment of tolls.

Michael Dickson was not in court as he faced five sample charges of passing through the M50 without paying.

The court was told he had crossed 432 journeys on the motorway, he paid 43 times and his last payment was in 2015.

Dickson, from Poppintree Parade in North Dublin, was one of 26 motorists accused of dodging tolls and received fines totalling almost €300,000 at Dublin District Court earlier this week.

The car owners were at the receiving end of levies ranging from €3,000 to €16,000 handed down by Judge John Brennan.

None of the defendants whose cases were dealt with attended their hearings or co-operated with the National Roads Authority, which Judge Brennan described as an aggravatin­g factor.

The judge said the fines must be paid within six months in most cases.

The standard M50 toll for an unregister­ed private car is €3.10 and must be paid before 8pm the following day or there is a €3 penalty.

Motorists have 14 days from the date of issue to pay for the journey and the initial penalty, otherwise a further penalty of €41 is applied.
