Bid Spikes interest in Gary bout

- BY BERNARD O’NEILL

GARY ‘SPIKE’ O’SULLIVAN’S team have accepted – in principle – an offer from Danny Jacobs’ camp to fight at the Barclays Centre in New York on April 28.

If the bout does go ahead it’s anticipated that Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor, the current WBA champion, will box in a unifier on the undercard.

Cork middleweight O’sullivan is promoted by Murhpy’s Boxing in Boston and co-promoted by Golden Boy USA. Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn promotes Jacobs and Taylor.

O’sullivan’s coach and manager Paschal Collins, said that Jacobs’ team made them an offer they couldn’t refuse and it’s now up the promoters to make it happen.

“It’s not a done deal. It’s basically a formal offer. We want to accept that and now it’s down to the promoters. The offer they came back with is a reasonably good offer,” said Collins, brother of ex-world champion Steve.

“We accepted it in principle. Let’s hope Matchroom, Murphy’s Boxing and Golden Boy can bring it over the line, which I’m sure they will.

”As Don Corleone said, we’ve been made an offer we couldn’t refuse. Now it’s down to the promoters to get the deal done.”

Hearn has previously indicated that Taylor will fight on the Barclays Centre card, with Argentina’s IBF champion Victoria Bustos touted as an opponent.

“If Danny Jacobs fights Spike O’sullivan, which I hope will happen. If that’s the case, I would like to do Katie Taylor in a unification fight potentially there (Barclays Centre) and then do an undisputed fight in September in Dublin,” he said.
