HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT WELL C4, 8pm

EAT less and exercise more. Surely it’s simple. Except that it isn’t, is it?

There are hundreds of diets out there – the cabbage diet, egg diet, souping diet, Copenhagen diet, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop detox. The mind boggles. And I bet not a single one of them approves of a chocolate bar at tea-time.

Dr Xand van Tulleken, one half of TV’S famous doctor twins, hosts this series which asks members of the public to road test the most hyped diets on the market.

He’s helped out by dietician Hala El-shafie, who tells it how it is. Eating yourself into an early grave? She’s not afraid to say so. And cook Stacie Stewart, who lost three stone and now runs a clean eating deli, whips up taster menus to help the dieters on their way.

It’s a fairly jovial show, with the dieters cheerily optimistic as they discuss their reasons for doing it – whether it’s a holiday, a wedding or, worse, a dreaded reunion.

What we don’t see is anyone staring forlornly at their fridge at 3am, maniacally clutching a Chinese takeaway menu or sneaking off to the pub. In this episode, gym buddies Lucy and Sue want to get bikini ready for a spa day. Fi and Sarah want to get trim for Sarah’s 60th birthday, and actors Bharat and Atul want to purge pounds for a Bollywood movie dance routine.

And Xand, ever the willing guinea pig, investigates poo pills. Now there’s something to put us off our food right away...
