MASUAKU APOLOGY OVER SPIT STORM

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

ARTHUR MASUAKU has apologised for his stupid red card for spitting, which will land him a six-game ban and a fine from West Ham. Masuaku was sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh for gobbing at Wigan’s Nick Powell and the West Ham defender admits he let down manager David Moyes and his team-mates.

He tweeted: “I let down my team-mates, the manager, coaches, board and the fans.

“I am very sad because the manager and the coaches have put a lot of faith in me, but I will work hard to try and win that back.

“It was in the heat of the moment and out of character for me, but I know it was totally unacceptable and I will learn from the first red card of my career.” Masuaku’s sending-off sealed West Ham’s embarrassing FA Cup exit at Wigan and he will receive an automatic six-match suspension from the

FA.

He will also be fined up to two weeks’ wages by the Hammers and team-mate

Angelo Ogbonna

(right) says he has to accept responsibility for losing his head.

“It didn’t help us to get Arthur sent off,” said Ogbonna. “It’s not like him because he’s a nice person. “I’m surprised that Arthur could do something like that and I think everybody, including the manager, is surprised. It happened and he has apologised already. “He’s a good guy. He made a mistake and he has to take responsibility.”

West Ham boss Moyes was angry with Masuaku when his squad is already stretched ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League game against

Crystal Palace. The Scot, who confirmed Pedro Obiang suffered ligament damage in the defeat, was baffled by Masuaku’s actions.

“He deserves everything he gets and he will get something he deserves from us,” said Moyes.
