RTE refuses to disclose stars’ fees

- BY GAVIN O’CALLAGHAN

RTE has refused to reveal how much each Dancing With The Stars contestant is pocketing for appearing on the show.

The national broadcaster claims it is not in the public interest to release the “commercially sensitive” costs. The station refused a request sent by the Irish Mirror this week, explaining the figures are “exempt” from Freedom of Information laws.

A statement read: “Contestant fees are commercially sensitive and are an intrinsic part of the editorial decision-making process.

“Confidential and commercially sensitive information, as requested, could adversely affect RTE’S ability to compete effectively and it would therefore not be in the public interest.

PROTECTED

“It is RTE’S view that there is strong public interest in protecting these records from release and this must be protected unless there are persuasive reasons to the contrary.”

The network also claimed disclosure would breach its contract with an independent production company which runs the show.

The broadcaster added it believed releasing costs would result in a loss for the firm that makes it and “prejudice” their competitive position.

Last year, bosses were left red faced after a leak revealed the 11 contestants, including RTE staff Des Cahill and Teresa Mannion, received around €3,000 a week for taking part.

With no eliminations until week three, constants were guaranteed to make around €9,000 while the winner, Kerry GAA star Aidan O’mahony pocketed €36,000.

The leak also claimed that the broadcaster had a wage bill of €72,600 after the first two weeks, before any of the professional dancers, hosts, or judges had been paid.

Last March, RTE chief Dee Forbes confirmed 200 jobs were to be cut as the station tries to reduce its costs.
