RTE star Daithi O Se has revealed he’s a real mammy’s boy and still seeks her approval.

The Kingdom’s favourite defended the Rose Of Tralee but admitted people always love to have a go at the iconic pageant. Speaking to RSVP magazine, which is out today, he said: “I was a typical mammy’s boy in one sense. Mum was always there for us in every capacity and did everything for us.

“Even when I was a young fella, my mother would give us A1’s for eating the dinner and you weren’t happy until you got that A1 from her, we were always looking for mum’s approval.”

The Today Show host, 41, revealed he sought her praise on his TV debut. He said: “The first time I was on television, the first person I called was my mother. The first time I did the Rose of Tralee she was in the audience.

“And people will say you did great, but you’re thinking, what did mum think? The buck will always stop with mum.

Daithi added people having a go a Daithi with his mother and father and wife Rita

the Rose Of Tralee is par for the course these days.

He said: “It’s like the Late Late Show, you’ll always have people firing stuff at it all the time and that’s fine. People call it the Lovely Girls competition – what a compliment.

“It shows you how big it is in our society that Fr Ted was having a go at it.”

But he added the merit of the contest is its longevity.

He said: “There’s a few reasons why people like it though. Firstly there’s the nostalgia factor. “People watched it with their own parents when they were young and they like to pass it on.

“But also we are nosey as a nation and one of the big reasons people watch is that something is going to happen.”
