Eamon O Cuiv MORE than 700 civil servants have lodged applications to move out of Dublin since November, new figures show.

The high cost of living in the capital have been blamed for the rise.

Fianna Fail spokesman on rural affairs Eamon O Cuiv said: “This surge, in such a short space of time, shows there is clearly a demand for a more regionalised civil service.

“The spiralling cost of living, combined with unsustainable rental prices and long commutes are making it less and less attractive for people to continue living in Dublin.

“The income levels these civil servants are on make it extremely difficult to afford to live in the city.

“These figures show a large appetite for a move to the regions. Not only is it more affordable, many feel they would have a better quality of life.

“Ministers need to take note of these figures and realise the redeployment of Government staff and State agencies to regional and rural towns must be examined and facilitated.

“This model improved economic conditions and creating long-term sustainable employment to rural towns and areas.

“The Civil Service Mobility Scheme clearly demonstrates a demand from civil servants wanting to work in the regions.” THIS seal looks flipping grumpy after missing out on a free fish by a whisker.

The peckish mammal had jumped on a tourist boat only to find a rival had already eaten all the treats.

He then glared at the camera before lunging at another seal.

John O’mahony, who is in his 50s, suffered a serious head injury in the early hours of Sunday.

CCTV from inside and outside the Abbey Bar on Abbey Street in Fermoy, Co Cork, is being examined by gardai. It is understood the main suspect is a businessman in his late 40s.

A local source said: “John had been out with friends at the pub. One punch was thrown and he fell and clattered his head.”

Mr O’mahony, who is a widower, was taken to Cork University Hospital where he had brain surgery for internal bleeding. The next 24 hours will be crucial to his recovery.

A source said: “He is still critical. He had surgery on Sunday and we won’t know the effect of that for a while. We are following a definite line of inquiry.

“An incident room has been opened in Fermoy and an investigation is ongoing.

“There were witnesses. There was a number of people inside the pub at the time and a number of witnesses have been interviewed already and we are appealing for anyone else who was there to contact Fermoy Garda station.”

It is understood gardai will not make any arrests until they get a full view of the man’s injuries and a prognosis from doctors.

Fine Gael councillor Noel Mccarthy said: “It’s very sad, absolutely terrible.

“I know him. Everybody in the town is devastated over it and it’s very sad because the man is fighting for his life after being out for a night out.

“He’d be well known, a nice lad, very good. He’s a quiet man, very decent and he was just out for a night out.

“The whole town is very upset for all parties for anything like this to happen in our town. Anyone I spoke to today is devastated by it and I wish him well.

“I met a woman earlier who said she was down in the church saying a prayer for him and maybe that’s what he needs and hopefully he’ll make a recovery.”

Meanwhile, gardai urged anyone who was in the Abbey Bar or who witnessed the assault to contact them at Fermoy Garda station on 025 82100, the Confidential Line on 1800 666111 or any station.
