A RINGLEADER in the Hatton Garden heist has died in jail days after being told he faced another seven years behind bars.

Terry Perkins, 69, is said to have died in his sleep.

His cut from the €15.4million raid was said to be around €5million of loot – but worth less on the black market.

Police also recovered around €4.8million of stolen goods, leaving Perkins’ outstanding share worth around €3.4million.

Last week he was ordered to repay €7.3million or his seven-year jail sentence would double. A source said: “Terry’s family are devastated. He had been unwell and taken to hospital on a number of occasions.”

Last week Perkins’ barrister said his client would serve the extra jail as there was “no prospect” of more being recovered. It is understood Perkins, of Enfield, North London, had €90,000 hidden away but police seized just €1,510 in cash. During the 2015 London raid, the gang drilled through a vault and stole gold, cash and gems from 73 deposit boxes.

It was the UK’S biggest burglary. Perkins, who died in London’s Belmarsh prison, was also due to face trial in May after €1million in goods was stolen from Chatila jewellers in Old Bond Street in 2010.

The Prison Service said there would be an investigation.

Timothy Spall, 60, who will play Perkins in an ITV drama, said of the gang: “They are not lovable rogues. They are criminals. The heist ruined the lives of ordinary people.” No date has been set for the broadcast.
