The Bit is between our teeth

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR BY PAUL O’HEHIR

SLIGO Rovers will prove they are a better team than last season’s table suggests, insists Micheal Schlingermann.

The Bit O’red fell out of the blocks in 2017 and manager Dave Robertson was sacked in April.

Gerard Lyttle succeeded him and helped steer the club to Premier Division safety on the final day of a season when three teams went down.

This year reverts back to the traditional ‘one down, one for the play-off’ scenario and goalkeeper Schlingermann is confident Rovers will hold their own.

Lyttle has bolstered his squad with interesting signings in ex-liverpool striker Adam Morgan and Brazilian midfielder Eduardo Pincelli, who arrives from Cyprus.

“Every player left from last year wants to prove that we’re a better team than we showed,” said Schlingermann.

“We have the bit between our teeth that we’re going to do better than last year and we have to start strong.

“The lads have come back strong, with great enthusiasm and a great attitude. The attitude is there to go well.

“We’ve a completely different style from last year and it comes from the freedom the manager gives players to express themselves.

“I think you’ll see a more expansive version of us – the football our supporters want to see.

“It’ll be tough initially as it’s the middle of February and the pitches won’t be carpets, they’ll be soft and heavy so we’ll have to be careful.

“But I think you’ll see the manager’s style coming through this team.”
