SENIOR GARDA FOUND DEAD IN STATION
Tributes paid to tragic detective
TRIBUTES were yesterday paid to a senior garda found dead at work.
Det Supt Colm Fox was discovered by a colleague at Dublin’s Ballymun Garda station at 9pm on Saturday.
His official firearm found at the scene.
Det Supt Fox was described as “pleasant, personable and professional” by a councillor and former solicitor who worked with him.
Separate investigations by gardai and the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission have been launched into the sudden death but it is being treated as a personal tragedy and no foul play is suspected.
The senior officer was aged in his 50s and lived in Dublin.
He was a lead investigator in the Regency Hotel murder of Kinahan cartel henchman David Byrne.
A Garda spokeswoman said yesterday: “Gardai are investigating the sudden death of a serving member of An Garda Siochana following an incident at Ballymun station.
“The scene was examined by the Garda technical bureau and the coroner was notified.
“Foul play is not suspected and the matter has been referred to GSOC.” Fianna Fail councillor was

Det Sgt Colm Fox Michael Smyth knew Det Supt Fox while he worked in Swinford, Co Mayo, in 2012/2013.
He told the Irish Mirror yesterday: “He was a good superintendent, he was conscientious. “As a colleague working in the courts environment he was pleasant and personable and professional.”
A former Garda colleague added: “He was an extremely nice person, a gentleman, very well respected.
“He was very professional and involved in many high-profile cases. “He’ll be a sad loss to the organisation. He was a family man and he was very well liked and respected by everybody.
“I’d like to pass on our condolences to his family.”
