SHETLAND BBC1, 9pm

Thanks to the terrible weather – everything is always grey and stormy – this series does a great job in making us feel completely unsettled right from the start.

Kind-hearted cop Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) is back for a new tale, which sees him deal with murders from the past and the present – which have scary similarities.

Shetlander Thomas Malone (Stephen Walters) has been released from prison after 23 years, having had his conviction for murdering local teenager Lizzie Kilmuir overturned – and Perez has to reopen the 1993 case.

“There’s a second suspect out there somewhere,” he tells the team, a call to arms if ever there was one.

Malone insists he’s innocent, and even Lizzie’s twin sister Kate admits she’s also had doubts about his guilt.

But then no sooner is Malone released, the body of another woman is found, killed in the same way.

Now his story is looking ever so slightly weaker.
