DANCING With The Stars’ Bernard O’shea might be at the bottom of the leaderboard but he is winning in the battle of the bulge.

The slimmed-down RTE star told how weeks of gruelling rehearsals has seen him lose two stone.

The 2fm Breakfast Republic broadcaster said he could shed more but his work commitments mean he has less time to work on his routines compared to some of the other celebrities on the show.

Bernard, 38, added: “The advantage is I’m on the radio every day but the disadvantage is I’ve less time to train.

“I have three hours a day to train where other people can concentrate on this 100%. But at the end of the day we all get the same two minutes, we all get the professional dancer and you have to go out and make your disadvantages advantages.”

The Laois funnyman told how juggling all his RTE gigs is a walk in the park compared to some of the other jobs he’s had over the years.

Bernard said: “I’ve worked so many jobs in factories, on farms. For the vast majority of my life I’ve worked jobs I found really tough and I hadn’t a penny so when the opportunity comes around to do three jobs that you love – Bridget & Eamonn, the radio and this – this isn’t work it’s just fun. It’s long and hard but I love it so much.”

Despite the low scores, Bernard said he refuses to ditch the comedy on the dance floor. He added: “I’m not going out to dance, I’m going to entertain, that’s what I do.

“I think I’ve now branded myself as this person who will consistently get low scores all the time. I refuse to take out the funny and entertaining bits.”

Currently favourite to fall victim of the first dance off of the series on Sunday night at 6/4, Bernard predicted he will be up against GAA broadcasting legend Marty Morrissey who is next in the Boylesports betting as a 3/1 shot to get the boot. Bernard said: “I’ve danced six times now.

“Next week will be interesting, maybe I will be in the dance -off. I’ll still go out and enjoy myself.

“If I was in a dance-off with Marty it would be one of those moments where me and Marty might just dance together.”

The dad of two confessed he has yet to meet his Breakfast Republic and Bridget & Eamon co-star Jennifer Zamparelli’s new baby boy Enzo. He said: “She texted me asking, ‘Was I still in that feckin dancing competition?’ and, ‘When are you coming into work?’”

Meanwhile, judge Brian

YESTERDAY

Redmond has hit back at professional dancer Ryan Mcshane who claimed the judges have been underscoring Anna Geary every week since the competition began.

Speaking to The Ryan Tubridy Show on RTE Radio 1, Brian admitted he went back and researched Anna’s previous scores saying that she received three nines on Movie Week.

He said: “I’d be a little bit neurotic about stuff like that, and when he said it I actually went online last night and double checked all of Anna’s scores over the series and she’s actually averaged just under seven-and-a-half as a vote for the series so far. For the first five to six weeks I think that’s a pretty good score.”

Responding to a text from a listener yesterday morning who said that Brian’s comments and scores were ridiculous and that Anna had her best performance on Sunday night, Brian said: “No, she didn’t. If that person feels that last night was Anna’s best performance they should definitely go back and look at her performance two weeks ago, from Movie Week.

“I’d go as far and say that that was probably a slightly different league.”
