IT’S BANAMAS 250 workers at bad bank and financial agency taking home over €100k

- BY GORDON DEEGAN

UP to 250 staff are pocketing salaries of more than €100,000 at the State’s bad bank and another Government financial agency, it was revealed yesterday.

It has also emerged there are close to 100 fatcats at Nama and the National Treasury Management Agency earning between €100,000 and €200,000 annually.

The pay bonanza for high fliers increased last year as the numbers on salaries over €100,000 jumped by six to 246.

Figures provided by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe showed at the end of last year, there were 103 employees at Nama on salaries over €100,000 with 143 in that earning bracket at the NTMA.

The number of high earners at the two State agencies increased in spite of numbers employed at both bodies declining last year.

According to figures one person at the NTMA was earning more than €400,000 with one individual at Nama in the same earning bracket.

In his written Dail response to Fianna Fail’s Michael Mcgrath, Mr Donohoe revealed the numbers of staff at the NTMA on salaries between €300,000 and €400,000 in 2017 was four with none in that earning bracket in Nama. He said 12 staff members at the NTMA were on salaries between €200,000 and €300,000 with four at Nama in the same earning bracket.

The Finance Minister also confirmed there are 98 staff at Nama earning between €100,000 and €200,000 last year with 124 NTMA staff in the same salary bracket.

Mr Donohoe stated “total remuneration includes base salary and any taxable benefits paid including performance related payments, paid in 2017 in respect of 2016 and retention payments if any. The inclusion of taxable benefits may move individuals into the next relevant band”. Nama has been criticised for selling off huge property portfolios to vulture funds at knock-down prices.

A site at Barrow Street in central Dublin was sold by the agency for €1.3million and re-sold within the year for €13million.

The agency sold New Century House in the Dublin Financial Services Centre for €28million in September 2013 and six months later for it went for €47million.

The latest figures show the very competitive pay rates available at the NTMA and Nama have made sure that job vacancy rates at the agencies are at a minimum.

Mr Donohoe has previously confirmed that 41 staff at Nama last year took up voluntary redundancy in the agency wide scheme. The cost of funding the redundancies in 2017 was €3.9million based on the 41 redundancies and this followed a €3.6million spend funding the redundancy of 50 staff in 2016.
