Chief Justice’s driver punched in random attack

- BY NIALL O’CONNOR

DETECTIVES have launched a hunt for a vicious attacker who punched the garda driver of Ireland’s most senior judge.

The incident happened at 9.30am yesterday in the Smithfield area of Dublin. It is understood the driver was alone in the car at the time and had already driven Chief Justice Frank Clarke to court.

A source said: “He was in the car when a man approached him – the attacker punched him.

“As the garda emerged from his car to confront the man he was punched again. The suspect then ran off. It looks like a purely random incident of street violence – it was not an attack on the Chief Justice.

“Investigators are confident of finding the suspect as there were a lot of people in the area at that time and plenty of CCTV.”

The driver was treated for minor injuries and investigations are ongoing.

A Garda spokesman appealed for help to find the attacker.

HE said: “The injured party, a man in his 50s, received minor injuries during this incident.”

Witnesses should call Bridewell Garda station on 01 6668200.
