FBI HUNT ADRIAN KILLER

US police close the net on fugitive gunman hiding out in Boston

- BY CILLIAN O’BRIEN and NIALL O’CONNOR

POLICE in the US are closing in on one of the killers of Garda Adrian Donohoe, the Irish Mirror can reveal.

The suspect in the 2013 murder at Lordship Credit Union in Co Louth is believed to be hiding out in Boston.

Now the FBI, Homeland Security and Massachusetts State Police have joined the manhunt.

They issued posters “appealing to the Irish community” to help capture the fugitive.

POLICE in Boston have circulated wanted posters as they close in on one of the killers of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe.

The FBI, Homeland Security and Massachusetts State Police are the latest American forces to lend their assistance to the manhunt.

Gda Donohoe, 41, was blasted to death while on a cash escort from the Lordship Credit Union in Co Louth in January, 2013.

The dad of two was ambushed by a five-man gang, understood to be from across the border in Newry, Co Down.

A reward of €50,000 from the Irish League of Credit Unions was offered for any information that may lead to an arrest and conviction.

Sources believe three suspects fled to America after the murder. Two have returned home but a third man is still on the run.

Now law enforcement agencies in Boston have begun to close in on him, issuing posters in the Dorchester and Quincy areas where they believe the fugitive to be hiding out.

The notice reads: “An Garda Siochana, the US Department of Homeland Security and the Massachusetts state police are appealing to the Irish community in Boston to help solve the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe on January 25, 2013, in Bellurgan, Co Louth, Ireland. Detective Donohoe was protecting his community on the night he was murdered.

“Investigators believe people living in Boston and the Upper Norfolk County towns of Massachusetts may have information that could assist the investigation.”

At the bottom of the flyers are phone numbers for the FBI in Boston and investigation teams in Dundalk and Massachusetts.

INTELLIGENCE

An Irish security source said: “There has been huge work done here by gardai hunting the people who have killed Adrian.

“The problem has been a lot of people are afraid to talk because of the area of Northern Ireland where these people are from.

“Despite that, there has been some very good work done on intelligence and it has been discovered that three of the men went to the US. It now emerges one of the suspects has been hiding in Boston.

“The law enforcement agencies in the US have been hugely helpful and hopefully they will catch this man.”

One suspect in the case was picked up in New York. The man, who is in his 20s, absconded to America after the murder but was extradited back to Ireland last year.

He is due for release from prison soon after being jailed for unrelated offences.

On the fifth anniversary of Gda Donohoe’s murder last month, his colleagues vowed to hunt the gang “to the end of the earth”.

Acting Garda Commissioner Donal O Cualain said: “The key to solving his callous and brutal murder remains in the local community and, most particularly, those people who know who the killers are.

“It is never too late to do the right thing. It is never too late to stand on the side of justice.”

Gardai revealed they had made significant progress and were liaising with police forces globally. However, no charges have yet been brought. Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan said there are witnesses with critical information.

He added: “The people involved in this murder no doubt got logistical and emotional support from their family and friends.

“I am speaking to you in particular, the family and friends of those who were involved. Your mind will never have peace until you tell the truth about what happened to Adrian. It is not too late to do the right thing.

“In any murder investigation there is a sense of fear within communities. I think Adrian’s murder strikes a chord with people. He was a man with family supporting the community and life was taken from him while he was out protecting people.

“He lost his life protecting us all. “I am confident there are people who have information. I am appealing to people to come forward and help.

“There are people sitting on the fence as regards should I, can I?

“You certainly can come to us and the information imparted to us will be treated with the utmost confidence. We are there to protect people.”
