Stormzy up for Stephen show

-

STORMZY is in talks to perform at a concert to remember Stephen Lawrence, after meeting Baroness Doreen Lawrence at the Brits.

Doreen is working with music execs at Universal to put on several shows to mark the 25th anniversary of her son’s death.

Passionate campaigner and Pride of Britain winner Doreen was introduced to Stormzy at the Brit Awards on Wednesday night, and said the grime star – who collected two awards at the event – was keen to lend his support.

She tells 3am: “Stormzy spoke to me about getting involved. He’s amazing.

“We’d like to put on a few different concerts around London rather than one single memorial.”

She adds that Universal have plans under way for the gigs, and said they are hopeful they will recruit a number of big names to take part.

It was 25 years ago that Stephen was murdered by racist thugs in an unprovoked attack in Eltham, South East London, on April 22, 1993.

Now Doreen says 2018 will be her final year of campaigning, after setting up The Stephen Lawrence Trust in his memory.

Stormzy won Best British Male Solo and the British Album of the Year awards at Wednesday night’s Brits.

His performance closed – and stole – the show, as he rapped lyrics lashing out at Prime Minister Theresa May over last year’s Grenfell Tower fire tragedy.

The 24-year-old sang: “Theresa May, where’s the money for Grenfell? What, you thought we just forgot about Grenfell? You criminals, and you’ve got the cheek to call us savages.

“You should do some jail time, you should pay some damages, you should burn your house down and see if you can manage this.”

No 10 responded saying the PM is “absolutely committed” to supporting survivors of the fire, which claimed 71 lives in June last year.

Later, he said of the verses: “I wanted to put something in the middle because I didn’t just want to come here as an artist like it’s the Stormzy show – clean up at the Brits, it’s all about me.

“If I can use my voice to say something I don’t want this to be about me.

“It’s about Grenfell and all the things I said in the lyrics. This is bigger than me.”
