JUDGE SLAMS ALL-IRELAND LEGEND’S ‘DRUG THUG’ SON Coked-up yob to pay €1k after assaulting garda

- BY TREVOR QUINN

A JUDGE has labelled the son of All-ireland winning manager Ger Loughnane a “drug-filled thug”.

Conor Loughnane, whose father twice led Clare to hurling victory, pleaded guilty to assaulting a garda, obstructing a garda and possession of cocaine.

The 34-year-old, of Highfield Park in Ennis, Co Clare, was ordered to pay more than €1,000.

The town’s District Court heard gardai found Loughnane arguing with another individual at Tullyvarraga, Shannon, on July 23 last year.

When they intervened the defendant became abusive and kicked out at Garda Noel Carroll connecting with his forehead and nose. The officer also suffered grazing to his knuckles.

Loughnane was brought to Shannon Garda station where he was found to be in possession of a small quantity of cocaine.

Two public order charges for engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and public intoxication relating to the same date were withdrawn.

Judge Patrick Durcan described Loughnane as “a drugfilled thug” and said the incident “must have been very upsetting for Gda Carroll and his family”.

He ordered him to pay €750 on the assault charge, €150 for possession of cocaine and €250 in relation to the obstruction offence with the matters being struck out on payment. Ger Loughnane
