Selfie pics make your nose bigger

Snaps drive people to have surgery

- BY MARK WAGHORN

BARRY Manilow take note – selfies make our noses look almost a third bigger, according to research.

Taking a picture of yourself from just a foot away changes the shape because of perspective.

The study shows the width of hooters zooms by about 30 per cent in proportion to the rest of the face and the tip of the nose appears seven per cent bigger.

Some people get so upset about their nose size in selfies that they resort to plastic surgery.

Dr Boris Paskhover, who specialises in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, said patients requesting nose jobs often show him their selfies.

He said he wanted to show them that the snaps don’t reflect the real thing.

Paskhover added: “Young adults are constantly taking selfies to post to social media and think those images are representative of how they really look, which can have an impact on their emotional state.

“I want them to realise when they take a selfie they are, in essence, looking into a portable funhouse mirror.”

Paskhover wanted to find a way to explain to patients why they cannot use selfies to evaluate their nose size.

His team developed a mathematical model that illustrates the level of nasal distortion created by photos taken at close range.

The American Academy of Facial Plastic andreconstructive Surgeons said 55 per cent of surgeons had reported patients coming to them for surgery so they look better in their selfies. Singer Manilow, 74, who has an, er, prominent nose, has denied having plastic surgery.

But speculation continues because of how his looks have changed dramatically over the years,
