A new low for Wenger

BRIGHTON .... 2 ARSENAL... 1

- BY JOHN CROSS

ARSENE WENGER admitted Arsenal’s run of defeats makes him feel as though they have “lost their trousers”.

On a day when he had to listen to loud chants of “We want Wenger out” from travelling fans, the Gunners boss (left) conceded he could understand them calling for him to be sacked – but insisted he can still turn things around.

It was Arsenal’s fourth defeat

in a row, their worst run in 16 years, and Wenger descended into Cantona-esque farce when talking about his team’s plight.

He said: “I can understand the frustration. It is difficult to recover from what happened to us last week (against Manchester City).

“It’s difficult for me to get into any negative assessment. When you struggle for confidence, it’s difficult as well when you have just the trousers on.

“It’s easy to take the trousers off as well, but when you are naked completely, you have to find a shirt and try to put it on again, get dressed normally again.

“Yes (I can turn it around). I’ve done it before. It’s the first time I’ve lost so many games on the trot in my life. I believe a quality of management is to try and shorten a crisis, and I can do that.”

Wenger admits the top four is gone and he will now prioritise the Europa League, adding: “We need two teams to collapse to qualify for the Champions League, and I don’t see that happening.”

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona (above) baffled everyone at a press conference in 1995 when he said: “When seagulls follow the trawler it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.”
