saoirse among stars to miss out on oscar awards

- BY DEMELZA de BURCA news@irishmirror.ie

SAOIRSE Ronan, Daniel Day-lewis and Martin Mcdonagh went home empty-handed from this year’s Oscars in a disappointing night for Irish film. Costume designer Consolate Boyle and Cartoon Saloon’s The Breadwinner also lost out in their respective categories at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday night.

It was a case of third time unlucky for Saoirse, 23, who was nominated for Best Actress for Lady Bird, with that award going to Frances Mcdormand for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The film was penned by London-irish playwright Martin Mcdonagh, however, he missed out on the Screenplay award to Jordan Peele’s Get Out.

The director was also left disappointed as the movie failed to pick up the Best Picture gong, which went to Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape Of Water.

Wicklow-based Daniel Daylewis, who was also nominated for his performance in Phantom Thread, lost out in the Best Actor category to Gary Oldman.

The British star won his first Oscar for his performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.

Consolate Boyle – who was nominated for her work in Victoria and Abdul – lost out to Phantom Thread’s Mark Bridges.

And Cartoon Saloon, which was also nominated for a third time, missed out in the Best Animated Feature category for The Breadwinner to Disney Pixar’s Coco. Meanwhile, Saoirse may have lost out on an Oscar but she topped Best Dressed lists around the world for her pink Calvin Klein gown.

The star’s stylist Elizabeth Saltzman told Vogue she wanted the actress to look “timeless”.

She said: “It needed to be about Saoirse as a person.

“The dress is just so beautiful and the train comes off, so she can party her ass off.”

LADY Bird star Saoirse Ronan went home empty-handed from the Oscars.

The 23-year-old from Co Carlow had been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

Not to worry, Saoirse, you’re still a top Lady.
