Robot chef is flipping good at burgers

- BY CHRIS BUCKTIN

Flippy CHEFS at a fast food restaurant have been replaced by an artificially intelligent robot, which its makers say can cook the perfect burger.

The machine, called Flippy, has a rotating arm with a spatula at the end, and costs €50,000. It has sensors and cameras to tell meat from buns and when patties are cooked.

Flippy has started work at Caliburger in Pasadena, California. US firm Miso Robotics developed the device. CEO David Zito, said: “Flippy works in tandem with kitchen staff. It knows when to flip burgers and places them on buns when ready.”

Many fear it will lead to major job losses. But Mr Zito said: “Humans will always play a critical role.”
