Ro proud of my lady Bird

SAOIRSE Ronan’s dad has told of his disappointment at her missing out at the Oscars but said: “I’m proud of her for who she is.”

Fair City actor Paul said Lady Bird star Saoirse was “blessed” to be nominated for best actress even though she didn’t win on Sunday.

The Dubliner added: “I was a bit disappointed for Saoirse when she lost out to Frances [Mcdormand], although losing is the wrong word to use. It’s her third Oscar nomination, and that, to a lot of actors would be a dream come true. “Each of the three times she was nominated a wonderful actress won the award so I would never say she was robbed or anything like that. She is blessed to be in such amazing company really, and hey, she’s only 24.

“I’m proud of Saoirse for who she is, not for any award or her talent as an actor.”

Like his superstar daughter, Paul is no stranger to the screen and is to make waves in Carrigstown as Anto Collins after making debut this week. Paul said: “Anto seems to be a bit of a Del Boy in a way, always on the make and loyal to his family.

“He’ll have a go at anything to keep the shillings in his pocket but he’s not a skinflint, he’ll spend it as soon as he gets it. It’s a fun character to play.”

The Veronica Guerin actor also said he’s become an avid soap fan since landing his part. Paul added: “I would tune in from time to time – but I’ve been binge watching it since I got the job.”

Fair City continues at 8pm tonight on RTE One.
