‘L’ drivers in 5.8% fatal crashes here
Learner drivers A TOTAL of 5.8% of fatal road crashes in the past four years involved a learner driver.
The Road Safety Authority also revealed nearly one in 10 Irish motorists hold a learner permit.
The data was released to RTE’S Prime Time amid plans to amend legislation which would hold the owner of cars responsible if learner drivers use them unaccompanied.
RSA chief Moyagh Murdock said: “On average 12 learners are involved in fatal crashes every year, 10 are unaccompanied.
“That compares very unfavourably with the North where in 2016 they reported no learner or unaccompanied learner involved in a fatal crash.”
