IRELAND is to be blasted with more wintry weather over the coming days as the Pest from the West arrives.

Last week, the country came to a standstill when snow drifts brought by the Beast from the East caused travel chaos.

While conditions are not expected to be as bad, the wintry weather is due to make a brief return.

Met Eireann has said temperatures could fall to as low as -4C overnight with sleet in some parts.

Widespread frost, icy stretches and thundery downpours are also forecast.

In a post on its website, Met Eireann said: “This morning frost and ice will soon clear but mist and fog may linger in the midlands. It will be dry with bright spells but cloud will increase from the south with rain in the afternoon and the risk of some heavy or thundery bursts later.

“On Saturday it will be cool over Ulster but mild elsewhere with the snow melt continuing apace. Sunday will be mostly dry and bright, with a mix of cloud and sunny spells.”

Looking ahead to next week, Monday is expected to be dry with sunshine and temperatures of 10C. However, early signs are for a spell of rain to extend from the Atlantic during Tuesday.
