Key 21 points of legislation for terminations
HEALTH Minister Simon Harris’ referendum Bill is asking the public to grant permission to legislate for abortion. He published a policy paper, divided into 21 sections, outlining what it would entail: Abortion be allowed on grounds of risk to the health of the mother
No distinction will be made between physical and mental health
Two doctors must sanction an abortion
In case of emergency, only one doctor is required
Abortions will be permitted in cases of fatal foetal conditions
Two doctors will decide a fatal foetal diagnosis
Abortion without limitation up to 12 weeks to be introduced
A time limit will elapse between doctor approving an abortion and the operation
There will be no limit for fatal foetal ops Doctors are the professionals on the Medical Council register
Deciding doctors must always be registered with the Medical Council Doctors must report abortions to the Health Minister
Women seeking abortions will have access to a review procedure
Doctors and nurses can opt out as conscientious objectors
There will be no restrictions on the right to travel or information
It will still be an offence to provide an abortion outside the law
A woman seeking an abortion will not be guilty of an offence
The Health Minister will publish an annual report on abortions
