Rare walrus spotted south of North Pole
Walrus on Sanday A WALRUS has been spotted far south of the Arctic for the first time in five years – in Orkney.
It was first seen on Thursday off the shores of North Ronaldsay, the northernmost island in the archipelago off the northeastern coast of Scotland.
The walrus came ashore on Sanday yesterday – the first time one is thought to have done so on the island.
Emma Webb, Sanday’s wildlife ranger, said: “He’s sleeping merrily. All the kids are coming to see him.”
A sighting so far south of the North Pole and Arctic Ocean is a rare occurrence.
In 2013, a male thought to have become lost during breeding season became the first walrus to land on North Ronaldsay for 25 years.
