We’ll still spend big says Jurg

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

LIVERPOOL are ready to go toe to toe with Manchester United’s millions in the transfer market.. but only for the right player.

Since becoming United boss, Jose Mourinho has spent £312million, with a net expenditure of £260m, while Klopp (above) has made a profit of £4m in his eight months longer at Anfield.

But the Anfield manager insisted the £70m capture of Virgil van Dijk in January shows Liverpool’s intent to rival even the biggest clubs.

“It’s all about timing, doing the right thing at the right moment. If the player is the right player this club will pay big money,” the German boss said.

“When the player is the right player it is not important how expensive he is. He needs to fit in the team, that’s why we paid the price we did (for Van Dijk).”

Mourinho has been criticised for his negative tactics but Klopp admits Liverpool may have to curb their gung-ho approach at times in today’s lunchtime showdown at Old Trafford.

“If we have to defend there, we have to defend with all we have,” he said.

“When United attack I hope all my players are involved in defending. If someone says that is parking the bus in that moment then we park the bus. I have no problem with that.”
