Army makes safe Civil War mortar shell

A NUMBER of homes were evacuated after a mortar shell from the Irish Civil War was found on a road.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team was called to the scene in Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare, on Saturday evening.

A cordon was put up at 6.20pm and houses were evacuated until 7.30pm when the incident was declared safe.

The old Civil War Era munition dates back to the 1920s.

A Defence Forces spokesman said: “Should members of the public encounter such munitions they are advised to maintain a safe distance and inform An Garda Siochana.”
