Blathnaid on fears for the Irish language

- BY SIOBHAN O’CONNOR

Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh BLATHNAID Ni Chofaigh has told how she’s been labelled a “Gaelnazi” as she strives to keep the Irish language alive.

Ahead of the St Patrick’s Day festival the mum of four has filmed a one-off documentary Lig Lom which airs on RTE One on Thursday.

Blathnaid, 47, said: “If I lose my language I’m nothing. That’s my identity – that’s me.

“Not enough people speak it. On Twitter, I’ve been called a Gaelnazi. Think about that.”

The Meath broadcaster added she has attempted to instil a love of Irish in her children but fears it’s already lost on them.

She said: “I’m still struggling for them to speak Irish to each other.”
