STAR Wars actor Mark Hamill has been revealed as the International Guest of Honour at this year’s St Patrick’s Day Festival.

The 66-year-old American, best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the iconic movie franchise, will jet into Ireland to view the National Festival Parade in Dublin on Saturday.

Hamill is the first ever International Guest of Honour and will look on from the Presidential stand.

The Californian is no stranger in these parts, having spent time in Kerry in recent years while filming scenes for Star Wars on Skellig Michael.

Hamill also has a family link to Ireland, with his ancestors hailing from Kilkenny and Donegal.

The announcement comes weeks after it was confirmed Game Of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham would take on the role of Grand Marshal for this year’s parade. St Patrick’s Festival chief Susan Kirby said: “The role of International Guest of Honour is something we have been considering for a few years.

“Mark has a special affinity to Ireland through his filming of Star Wars and family history and has done much for our film industry.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming him back home to celebrate our national holiday with us.”

Failte Ireland’s Head of Festivals Ciara Sugrue added: “The Force will truly be with us on March 17.

“We are delighted to hear Mark Hamill will be joining us as the first ever St Patrick’s Festival International Guest of Honour.” Actor Mark Hamill
